Coffee Saturdays: Toby's Estate

In this cold and breezy holiday weather, a warm cup of good coffee is in order! In that nutshell, Coffee Saturdays is back! This time, we go from local to down under!

Let's go...

Ambiance and Accommodation
I believe that Toby's Estate Salcedo branch located at 125 V. Corporate Center, L.P. Leviste Street, Salcedo Village, Makati City has a bigger footprint than the rest of its branches around the metro to cater the dining area. Simply put, it offers both coffee and dining experience at the same time. Seats of different sizes and seating capacity are well laid out both inside and outside.

Dining area
"...it offers both coffee and dining experience at the same time."

I like the how they light the dining area and the small details like the wall clocks.

This may be good and bad in two ways. This is great for people who both want to drink coffee and dine simultaneously. Diners may choose from the variety of cakes, pastries and dishes that they offer! Conversely, it may detract coffee drinkers or people on the go. They may feel out of place especially when the rest are diners.

Another (dark and gritty)
point of view of the dining area.

The staffs were quick to serve and rather nice. My waiter was polite enough to inform me that my intended order is not available. Cold water in wine bottles is served in every table as standard.

The Coffee
I ordered Cappuccino (Php 130.00) and Pistachio Cheesecake (Php 250.00) for dessert (10% service charge not included).

Cappuccino (Php 130.00)

The Cappuccino was presented in its signature black cup and leaf latte art. It has an a-okay taste—not that surprisingly special. The thing that I don't like was the runny consistency of my coffee. It may be either prepared that way or my Cappuccino was simply an accidental mishap by the barista.

The Pistachio Cheesecake has an odd Pastel Green appearance. I eventually realized (thanks to a friend) that a Pistachio is naturally Green in colour (silly me, lol). The Blueberry is replaced with a generous amount of whipped cream on top and very minute crushed Pistachios.

Pistachio Cheesecake (Php 250.00)
"The crushed Pistachios give depth to the seemingly normal Cheesecake texture"

The Pistachio Cheesecake has a subtle flavour compared to the regular version. The crushed Pistachios give depth to the seemingly normal Cheesecake texture. After tasting the cake either with or without the whipped cream, I can say that the Pistachio Cheesecake can stand on its own!

Conclusion
I have mixed impressions with Toby's Estate. To be honest, I don't feel that their coffee raises the bar in terms of taste. I was expecting that the various dishes that they offer are there only to complement their coffee. That said, Toby’s Estate still compensates on chic ambiance, great service and interesting twists on well-known dishes (the Pistachio Cheesecake for example)

If you want a resto that complements its good food with coffee, then Toby's Estate is highly recommended on your list. If you’re at the other side of the camp, I suggest you look somewhere else.

  1. Being a Civil Engineer is a hard job and drinking coffee and dining at the same time sounds good to me.
